If you want to provide your hardwood flooring with a renewed look, it can be achieved through hardwood buffing. When recoating wood floors, it has been recognized as an affordable option to revive dull looking or worn out hardwood flooring. Nevertheless, the procedure is not for all floors. Hardwood flooring that has been prominently scarred or scratched on the top layer could not be recoated anymore. In case like that you should consider wood floor refinish. If you are planning on recoating wood floors in your home, it is better to check this article.

If you are going to perform the hardwood buffing on your own, there are items that you need. Initially, you need a floor buffer. You can easily rent one at your local home store or tool rental shop. In case you have never used one before, it is best to utilize a square buffer. By using square buffers, they simply vibrate instead of oscillate as well as simpler to use. You also need a white buffer pad and several grit sanding screens. Other items that you need are microfiber dust mop, wood finish that is water-based or oil-based polyurethane, foam brush, lamb’s wool applicator for oil products and a vacuum.

Once you have all the materials ready for hardwood buffing, you have to buff the entire floor with the floor buffer using the white pad and the sanding screen. In doing so, some of the scratches present on the surface will be removed as well as roughen the finish that is already there. By roughing up the finish, it can help bind the new coatings to the floor.

The moment the floor has been buffed thoroughly, you have to vacuum the floor. Make sure that all the dust and debris are vacuumed. It's better to vacuum everything couple times and use empty vacuum bag for the last cleaning. Make sure to vacuum your heating ducks before that so dust wont get blew out from it once you turn heat on.

Now you can apply the finish that you want. If you will use the oil-based finish, you should use a lamb’s wool applicator. For the water-based finish, you can utilize a water-based applicator. Take note that it is the simplest to apply, just make sure that it is thin in order to prevent streaks. If it was applied thinly, you can rebuff the floor, clean and apply another finishing coating. Rebuffing is optional, you don't have to do it in case if finish applied evenly. In general floors are buffed just once between the coats.

Lastly, you have to wait for your floor to completely dry and wait for the recommended time of the finish to cure before moving the furniture back into the floor.
